By Darin Koob | Outer Escapes

Being located on the East Coast is about the only thing these two fishing destinations have in common. Read on to learn more about fishing on Cape Cod and in the Florida Keys.

CAPE COD

If you’re chasing striped bass and/or smallmouth bass, then without question, you need to consider fishing on Cape Cod. Some have called it the, “Striper Capital of the World.” Striped bass feed throughout the entire water column on a variety of food items and can be caught through several techniques. Utilizing live bait, cut bait, and lures are all popular ways of targeting this species.

Surf Fishing is also a very popular way to target stripers. Anglers surf cast, often using sea worms with a circle hook. During the spring and fall, fishing on Cape Cod is amazing as large schools of striped bass enter the Cape Cod Canal. These fish can reach up to 50 pounds and can often be found by a short cast. Generally, when you get a bite you have found the school. Fishing on Cape Cod offers miles of beach to search for these prized fish. Some of the hard-core striped bass fisherman will call it an addiction. Learn more about Cape Cod and the surrounding area.  Here are a few characteristics about “Stripers” that some call the “perfect gamefish.”

  1. Challenge to catch

  2. Delicious to eat

  3. Fairly large fish

  4. Easily accessible

  5. Safe to handle

FLORIDA KEYS

Fishing on Cape Cod is great but if you’re looking for Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit, many anglers are attracted to the Florida Keys. The Keys separate the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean and span 137 square miles. The climate is more similar to the Caribbean than the rest of the state of Florida. Don’t for a minute underestimate the advantages of utilizing a boat or hiring a guide to chase these legendary species. But there are obviously added expenses when paying for this pleasure. Grab your Paxis backpack and go wade fish and chase a fish of your dreams.

Whether it’s the allure of hooking a robust 100-plus-pound-Silver-King, feeling the sensation of your fishing reel sizzle with an irritated Bonefish, or matching wits with an elusive Permit, the Keys offer outstanding possibilities of landing that dream catch. You will be much more prepared with a Paxis backpack storing your fishing arsenal. Wade fishing in the secluded Florida Bay flats is a great affordable option for the angler. From Key Largo to Dry Tortugas, the tropical waters throughout the islands draw many wade fishermen chasing their dreams. Here are a few areas ideal for wade fishing in the Keys:

  • Bahia Honda State Park – On the oceanside. Opportunities for wade fishing.

  • Ohio Key – Another oceanside section of the flats that is best waded at low tide.

  • Missouri Key – Beautiful ocean flat to walk, located at mile marker 39.5.
